Exploring a New Craft: Our Journey into Pottery
As artists, we’re always looking for new ways to express creativity. Most of our time is spent either on the computer designing intricate engravings or in the woodshop bringing those designs to life. But recently, we decided to step outside of our comfort zone and try something completely new - pottery.
A Hands-On, Exploratory Experience
Unlike the precision of laser engraving or the structure of woodworking, pottery has been an entirely different experience—one that requires patience, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace imperfections. There’s something incredibly grounding about working with clay, feeling it take shape beneath our hands, and allowing it to evolve organically.
At first, it was humbling. Clay has a mind of its own, and getting a feel for centering, shaping, and refining a piece has been a challenge. But with each attempt, we’ve found ourselves more in tune with the process, letting go of expectations and enjoying the creative flow.
Pushing Our Creative Boundaries
Pottery is pushing us in ways we didn’t expect. It’s less about control and more about intuition - listening to the clay, learning from the mistakes, and being okay with the fact that not every piece will be perfect (or even survive the kiln!). But that’s part of what makes it so exciting.
The beauty of starting something new is that it reminds us what it’s like to be beginners again - to struggle, to learn, and to celebrate small wins along the way. It’s given us a fresh perspective on our creativity, helping us appreciate the process as much as the final product.
Incorporating Pottery into Our Business?
Right now, pottery is an exploration, a passion project that lets us step away from screens and tools and get our hands dirty in a new way. But as we get better, we can’t help but dream about how this could eventually weave into our business. Maybe hand-thrown candle vessels? Maybe engraved ceramic pieces? The possibilities are endless, and that’s what excites us the most.
For now, we’re just enjoying the journey, embracing the imperfections, and reminding ourselves why we fell in love with creating in the first place.
